7th Grade Writing

I am very excited to welcome you to my English class! I am looking forward to a fun and successful year. I welcome and encourage parent-teacher and student-teacher communication. It has been my past experience that communication via e-mail with parents is the swiftest method should your parent need to contact me.  

Topics Covered:

Writing process (planning, developing, revising/editing)

Parts of speech

Literary Texts (imaginative stories, poems)

Procedural Texts

Personal Narratives

Expository Texts (students will write this on the STAAR test)

Persuasive Texts

Sentence Structures

Revising and Editing passages (this will be on the STAAR test)


REQUIRED MATERIALS:

  • Composition book

  • Highlighter(s)

  • Pencils/Pens

  • Colored Pencils

  • 1½ inch binder

  • pencil bag - recommended - not required

ELA Composition Notebook:

It is very important for each student to have a composition book at the beginning of the year! Students will take notes in this, and it will be an excellent tool to use for unit exams, semester exams and the STAAR test.  Notebook grades will be taken at least 2 times a grading period.


GRADING:  In each 9 week grading period, there will be at least 12 daily grades and at least 3 major test grades (Daily= 60% Test=40%)


Retests:  Retests will be allowed if you receive below a 70 on a TEST.  After you have received your grade, you will have 3 days to schedule a retest with me.  The highest possible grade on a retest will be a 70.  


MAKE UP WORK: If you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, to check the make-up folder for your assignment. You will have the same number of days to make up your work as you were absent. It is the STUDENT'S responsibility to get the work they missed the day they return. If you miss class due to extracurricular activities, it is the student’s responsibility to get your work BEFORE you leave.


LATE WORK: Late work will be accepted with penalties.

  • 1 day late...70 will be the highest grade possible

  • 2 days late...50 will be the highest grade

  • more than 2 days late...work WILL NOT be accepted


CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

  1. Arrive to class on time and prepared with all supplies every day. You will need something to write with everyday! Do not come without a writing utensil.

  2. Be in your seat when the tardy bell rings working on your bell ringer, you will be counted tardy if you are not in your seat

  3. Be RESPECTFUL

  4. Be responsible

    1. Take care of business before you come to class. Do not ask to go to the restroom during lecture time. Emergencies will be handled on a case by case basis.

  5. All school policies apply in this classroom. This means no cell phones, ipods, food, hats etc.

  6. ALWAYS come to class with a positive attitude and ready to learn


DISCIPLINE POLICY

If a student chooses to participate inappropriately, corrective action(s) will be taken:

1: Verbal warning

2: Meeting with the teacher

4. Teacher conference with the parent

5. Office Referral

  1. Verbal Praise

  2. Note/ Email to the parent

  3. Note/Email to the principle

  4. All Star Board
