2017-2018 Algebra I Syllabus

                                                               ALGEBRA I

 

 

Course Description

 

Description This course continues to build on the basic mathematical understandings developed in grades K-8. Students will use symbols in a variety of ways to study relationships among quantities, particularly relationships in which there exists a systematic dependence of one quantity on another. These functional relationships will provide situations for students to set up and solve equations. The focus in Algebra I will be on problem solving and linear functions, but quadratic and other nonlinear functions will also be explored.  Preparation for the state assessment is an integral part of Algebra I.

 

Course Information

Supplies –

  • Pencils
  • 100-page composition notebook
  • Folder
  • Glue sticks
  • 4- AA batteries
  • Kleenex
  • We will also use scissors.  I have a class set, but if you prefer your own, please bring them every day.

 

Homework and TestsEach day, students will receive instruction on a topic.  During instruction, students will take notes over the material.  Students will then complete an assignment over the material.  Any classwork not completed will be assigned for homework.  We will use the district’s late work policy as stated in the Edgewood ISD Student Handbook.  Four tests will be given during each nine weeks grading period.  Tests will be announced, and students will be given a review prior to each test.  Tests may include major projects.  A notebook test will be given each nine-week period as well.

 

Re-Do Work

Corrections and re-tests are allowed on tests for grades below 70.  Half of the points missed will be given back on the test grade for a maximum grade of 70.  Deadlines for re-tests will be announced.  If the deadline is not met, the original grade will stand.   

 

   The following must be completed prior to a re-test:

       a)  All homework assignments for the unit must be completed.

       b)  All problems on the test review must be worked.

       c)  Re-tests will be given on the date and time provided by the teacher. 

 

This policy does not apply to work that was subject to a penalty due to academic dishonesty, work that was expected to be done within a class period, final exams, or work that was once considered late work.

 

 

Tutorials

Tutorials will be offered in the morning before school beginning at 7:35. This is the best time to come in for help or to make up a missing quiz or test.  I will also be available after school by appointment. 

 

Classroom Expectations

  1. Be courteous.
  2. Be on time.
  3. Bring materials to class each day. (pencil, notebook paper, composition notebook)
  4. No food, drink, or gum in the classroom.
  5. Students will follow all district rules.

 

Grading Policy

Daily Grades – 50% – Quizzes, class work, homework

Test Grades – 50% –  Tests, major projects

 

 

2017-2018 Algebra II Syllabus

ALGEBRA II

 

 

Course Description Algebra II extends the fundamental concepts of Algebra beginning with equations and inequalities. It includes the study of functions, graphs, matrices, systems, transformations of parent functions, sequences and series, and the complex number system. Algebra II provides an opportunity for students to make connections between Algebra and Geometry.
