EDGEWOOD, TX – Four Edgewood High School FFA members recently traveled to Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Marshall to compete in the Texas High School Welding Series, marking an exciting return to this type of competitive event for the Edgewood FFA Agricultural Mechanics program.

Representing Edgewood FFA were G. Haynes, B. Lumpkin, I. Martinez, and I. Bruton, who participated in both individual welding competitions and the Agricultural Mechanics Build-Off Challenge.

The competition provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate their technical knowledge, welding abilities, problem-solving skills, and teamwork while competing alongside students from other high school agricultural mechanics programs.

One of the day's biggest challenges came during the Ag Mechanics Build-Off, where participants were given just four hours to construct a deer feeder. Working under a strict time limit, students were required to apply their welding and fabrication skills, manage their time effectively, and collaborate to complete the project.

The challenge tested more than their technical abilities. It required students to think critically, adapt to obstacles, and work together under pressure, providing valuable hands-on experience that closely mirrors situations encountered in professional welding and fabrication careers.

The event was particularly meaningful for Edgewood FFA, as it marked the first time in many years that the district's Ag Mechanics students had participated in this type of competition. Their willingness to step outside their comfort zones and take on a new challenge reflects the continued growth and opportunities available through the Edgewood FFA program.

Adding to the excitement, students were also given the unique opportunity to experience underwater welding following the completion of the build-off challenge. This experience introduced them to a specialized area of the welding industry and provided additional exposure to potential career pathways within skilled trades and technical fields.

Competitions such as the Texas High School Welding Series play an important role in agricultural education by allowing students to apply classroom instruction in real-world settings. Beyond developing technical skills, these experiences help students build confidence, strengthen communication, practice teamwork, and gain a better understanding of career opportunities in agriculture, manufacturing, and skilled trades.

Edgewood ISD is proud of the initiative, determination, and professionalism demonstrated by these four students as they represented their school and FFA chapter.

For G. Haynes, B. Lumpkin, I. Martinez, and I. Bruton, the experience was about much more than competition. It was an opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills, explore career possibilities, and help build a stronger future for Edgewood FFA's Agricultural Mechanics program.

Congratulations to these students on an outstanding effort and for proudly representing Edgewood FFA. Their participation marks an exciting step forward for the program and sets the stage for continued growth and future competitive opportunities.
