I plan to attend the University of Texas at Tyler in the fall. 💜 Do you know what degree you are pursuing and if so, what is it? I plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with the goal of continuing my education to earn a Master of Science in Nursing and become a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. 💜 What does this honor mean to you? Being named Valedictorian is incredibly meaningful to me. It validates the years of hard work, the late nights spent studying, and the sacrifices I made along the way. This honor is more than just a title, it reflects perseverance, growth, and the unwavering support of those who have stood beside me. It symbolizes every moment I chose discipline over ease and every challenge I faced head-on despite self-doubt. More importantly, it is a tribute to the people who inspired and believed in me- my teachers, family, and peers. I do not see this recognition as a symbol of being “the best,” but rather as a responsibility to lead with humility, gratitude, and purpose. It reminds me that success is not just measured in grades, but in character. 💜 If you could thank one teacher, who would it be and what would you want to say? While I am grateful to every teacher who has guided me, I especially want to thank Mrs. Cheyenne Pickens. Her unwavering support, kindness, and passion for teaching have profoundly impacted my life. She has challenged me to grow, believed in my potential, and helped shape me into the student and person I am today. Next year I will be attending the University of South Carolina Honors College in Columbia SC. 💜 Do you know what degree you are pursuing and if so, what is it? I will be majoring in Broadcast Journalism and possibly double majoring in Theater. 💜 What does this honor mean to you? To me, being salutatorian is more than just an honor, it’s a reflection of my hard work and dedication. I’ve spent the last four years not only challenging myself academically, but showing up—in person, in leadership, in performance, and in service. I’ve balanced late nights studying with leadership roles, and countless extracurricular events all of which have allowed me to demonstrate commitment and integrity. This honor isn’t just about grades, it’s about perseverance, presence, and the choice to take the hard road, even when shortcuts were available. To me, this recognition is a testament to doing things the right way, even when I didn’t have to. 💜 If you could thank one teacher, who would it be and what would you want to say? Coach Mulligan, the past year, you’ve been one of the few teachers who truly challenged me, not just in workload, but in the way you pushed me to raise my own expectations. You expected more from me because you believed I was capable of more. That kind of belief, paired with real academic rigor, is rare, and is what makes you such an amazing teacher and person. Coach Mulligan, you’ve reminded me that the best educators aren’t the ones who make things easy, they’re the ones who push you to grow, even when it’s uncomfortable. 💜 Do you have anything you would want to add about what Edgewood means to you? Because of its small size Edgewood has given me the ability to wear many hats. I’ve been able to participate in every activity I could think of all at the same time. It’s also forced me to look outside of school for larger opportunities that have led to some of my proudest achievements. Being the historian of my graduating class means more to me than just a number or rank - it’s a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices I’ve made throughout my high school journey. It represents the late nights spent studying, the balance between academics and extracurriculars, and the constant push to better myself, even when things got tough. This achievement reminds me that determination and perseverance truly pay off. It also makes me proud to set an example for others, showing that with focus and effort, success is possible. Most importantly, it motivates me to carry this same level of commitment into college and everything I do in the future. 💜 If you could thank one teacher, who would it be and what would you want to say? If I could thank one teacher, it would be Ms. McGahee, my Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II, College Algebra, and College Statistics teacher. I want to thank her not only for helping me grow academically, but for always believing in me and pushing me to reach my full potential. Ms. McGahee made learning engaging by being patient, supportive, and always willing to explain things until they made sense. She challenged me in the best way and showed me that I was capable of more than I thought. Beyond the classroom, she was someone I could count on for encouragement and guidance, and her kindness never went unnoticed. I’m so grateful for the impact she’s had on my life and education, and I’ll carry her lessons with me far beyond high school. 💜 Do you have anything you would want to add about what Edgewood means to you? Edgewood means more to me than just the place I went to school—it represents growth, strength, and the courage to rise above. To me, Edgewood means growing past the people who belittle you and proving that their words don’t define your worth. It means taking the road less traveled—choosing honesty, hard work, and perseverance over shortcuts—while others may have looked for the easy way out. Edgewood is a reminder that no matter where you start, you always have the possibility to find better things for yourself—better opportunities, better paths, and a better future. It’s where I learned to believe in my potential, even when others didn’t, and that belief will continue to guide me. It’s the recognition for my years of hard work and dedication in school as well as a reflection of who I am as a person and how, with God first, I was able to overcome all obstacles that life through my way. 💜 If you could thank one teacher, who would it be and what would you want to say? I would thank my counselor Mrs. Erwin for being an immense support to my academic career. She believed in my goal to be the first Edgewood student to graduate with an associates degree and gave me all her guidance to pursue and finish it. I plan to attend Sam Houston State University in the fall! 💜 Do you know what degree you are pursuing and if so, what is it? I will pursue a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Engineering and a minor in Agricultural Business. I also plan to obtain my teaching certification. 💜 What does this honor mean to you? This honor means more than just getting good grades throughout high school. To me, being the fifth in the class shows my hard work while being gone in different states and at different events with FFA or athletics. It shows my dedication, no matter the circumstance, and it is a testament to my perseverance through each obstacle I have faced. I am extremely proud to be the fifth in my class and I hope I have been a role model to each younger student at Edgewood ISD. 💜 If you could thank one teacher, who would it be and what would you want to say? If I could thank one teacher that I have had at Edgewood ISD it would be Mrs. Cheyenne Pickens. Mrs. Pickens was my coach throughout middle and high school and was my dual credit TVCC professor for Composition 1 and 2 during my junior year of high school. Although Mrs. Pickens left Edgewood once the 2023-2024 school year concluded, she taught me how to write solid essays, resumes, and letters during the one year I had her as a teacher. Furthermore, she taught me how to analyze data for useful information to use in projects or presentations. If I could tell Mrs. Pickens one thing as an Edgewood graduate, I would tell her thank you for all of the advice and skills she has taught me. Her passion and dedication has inspired me to always work graciously and diligently. The skills I learned will help me in my future career as a sales representative, thank you again Mrs. Pickens! 💜 Do you have anything you would want to add about what Edgewood means to you? To me, Edgewood means family. The community of Edgewood sticks together through thick and thin and it has inspired me to do the same in the SHSU community.
